Our current People OS is broken
The People Operating System refers to the way in which we conceive, structure and organize human work. This concept emphasizes the human dimension of work, which must be understood in a systemic way, at the individual, collective (team), organizational (company) and societal levels.
However, the current People Operating System no longer seems to work, and we are at a tipping point.
Figures are alarming:
- 85% of employees worldwide say they are actively disengaged in their work, according to the Gallup State of the Global Workplace report.
- 69% of employees say they would work harder if they felt more appreciated, according to the Worldmetrics 2024 report.
- 40% of Generation Z employees plan to leave their jobs within the next two years, according to the Deloitte 2022 Gen Z and Millennial Survey.
Faced with an accelerating world, rising individual aspirations and increased systemic complexity due to economic globalization, the system in place seems too rigid to enable companies to adapt with agility, efficiency and humanity. The People Operating System must evolve.
Towards a new People Operating System?
Léa Peersman, an expert on the future of people at work, explains that this new People Operating System is based on three essential fundamentals:
- People-centric: A holistic approach to the employee, going beyond the simple evaluation of skills. This pillar aims to put people back at the heart of organizations, taking into account their aspirations and personal development.
- Technology-driven: Technology, and in particular artificial intelligence, becomes a lever for personalizing employee experiences, aligning individual and collective objectives with organizational ambitions, and enhancing human capabilities on a day-to-day basis.
- Distributed: This pillar relies on the active contribution of all stakeholders – from HR to leaders and managers – and aims to empower every player. This distributed model fosters autonomy and responsibility, so that every level of the organization contributes to its success.
In short, the People Operating System seeks to align our work structure and processes with human needs and evolutionary dynamics, to promote performance and well-being in constantly changing business environments.
HR teams and managers can now build the sustainable people infrastructure that will enable the company to adapt to market developments and business model changes. Léa Peersman concludes that the new People Operating System must become an integrated management system for intelligence, both human and artificial, optimized in a systemic way.
